The blanket material consists of U in which plutonium is bred. The reactor core alloy is uranium-5% fissium and contains about 46 wt.% U/sup 235/. The Fuel Cycle Facility is a plant for reprocessing, by pyrometallurgical methods, the core and blanket material discharged from EBR-II. The Fuel Cycle Facility for the Second Experimental Breeder Reactor (EBR- II), the process equipment, and the operations to be conducted in the facility are described. The technique of tritium labeling by gas-exposure (the Wilzbach method) is also discussed. A chapter on the methods of primary radioisotope production and the preparation of labeled compounds is included as background information. The safe handling of radioisotopes, the proper design of radiotracer laboratory facilities, and the statistical analysis of counting data are also treated. An extensive bibliography, covering both the preparation of samples for liquid scintillation counting and the operating characteristics of the more » counter assembly, is included. Particular attention is devoted to liquid scintiliation counting. The 3 sections of the text are: the text proper, covering the principles of radiotracer methodology a set of basic laboratory exercises, intended to familiarize the user with procedures in detecting and characterizing radioactivity and a selection of typical radiotracer experiments illustrating applications in various fields of biological science. The essential concepts and information needed by the biologist using radiotracer methods are summarized in an introductory text suitable for class or individual use.
